Let us first set up a list of distinctions before we define what we call Alternative Medicine:

Healing vs. Treatment
Let’s understand the difference of the two when dealing with medicine.
Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
Treatment, (Palliative), treatment designed to relieve pain and distress with no attempt to cure.
Very basic and to the point.
Curing Disease vs. Management of Disease
Let’s understand the difference of the two when dealing with medicine.
Inherent in the idea of a Cure is the permanent end to the specific instance of the disease. Disease management is defined as “a system of coordinated health care interventions and communications for populations with conditions in which patient self-care efforts are significant.”[1][2][3] It is the process of reducing healthcare costs and/or improving quality of life for individuals by preventing or minimizing the effects of a disease, usually a chronic condition, through integrative care. Again, basic and to the point.

Since prehistoric times, the Healing Arts, Majik, Medicine, etc., all had one thing in common, to rid a person of an illness they had. If the illness could not be corrected, the person, (totally depended on what past time, nation and wealth status he/she was), was either left to die or cared for the rest of their life. Is this skull showing evidence of trepanning? 
In the past, if you were sick, you first tried a multitude of home remedies that was pasted down from generation to generation. Usually, if you were a member of a small village, or royalty, the local medicine man/woman would be called in. This medicine person would be educated in the herbs, foods, minerals and practices of their time and culture.
Many times the treatments/cures, by past healers, had spiritual rituals as the main forcus on healing sick individual. In other cases, it was but only one of the many tools the healer used.
Believe it or not, many healing practice came from the care of domesticated animals.
Domesticated animals, since the time cave men first took to farming, has been one of the most important factor to the livelihood of farmers, a town, a village and other communities of the past/present. In fact, stealing money was a far less offence then stealing cattle. In many counties in the past, the offence was punishable by death. In the wild west of the US, Cattle rustling were only out wade by horse rustling. With out the horse, back then, chances were very good that you would be found dead in the desert.
So, the health of animals was more important than humans for economical reasons, for most of history, even today. To test this statement, go read the nutritional ingredients of monkey, dog horse chaw. Then compare it to human baby food. With thousands of years of observing, testing and treating animal illness, farmers learned well, if it works for them, perhaps it will work for humans. Hence, this was one beginning of alternative medicine.
From the mid 1800s to the present, alternative medicine of the past was medicine practiced. Period! When medical corporations got involved around 90 years ago, real medicine took a back seat and became Alternative Medicine, (medicine that once cured & treated). Medicine of today, as practiced by developed countries, is the main template of all treatments of disease, (except there is NO CURE associated with modern medicine).
Now let’s get to the real ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE, of the present.
