Hand Powered Portable Washing Machine
A Pressure Cooker That Cleans Clothes.
This small size, portability device can be home built or purchased and requires no electricity or batteries – just a little elbow grease.
This hand powered portable washing machine is an extremely eco-friendly product providing a cheaper alternative to hotel laundry service, enjoying camping or needing a break from trekking to the Laundromat or laundry room of your apartment building.
The principle behind the operations is the same as that of a simple pressure cooker. You add a cup or more of water with a small amount of washing detergent close the lid, turn the container for a few minutes and that’s it. Dump out what little dirty water is in the container through a built in spigot and remove clothes for air drying.
You see, by turning the container, the agitation creates the same pressure inside like when you shake a soda can. The pressure inside forces the small amount of water and detergent through the pores of the clothes, hence washing them. In fact, they are often cleaner than using conventional washing machine. The major difference is that it takes only minutes to wash, with out electric and 1/1000 the amount of water.
This little washing machine can hold up to five men’s shirts.
I wouldn’t recommend this for big loads of laundry at home –but this little portable washer may provide a quick on-location, or off-grid, laundry solution. It came in handy during my many tent camping roughing trips. My friends never understand how I had clean clothes every day, for over a week. Oh well. 😎
This unit cost about $50, but you can wash the same amount of clothes for potentially zero cost for the unit.
I was able to do the same wash amount by using a regular large bucket with an air tight lid. The bucket will last a lot longer than the above device and can be easily replaced! Or, for $16, you can purchase one with a spigot, to drain the dirty water, http://www.homebrewery.com. Have Fun Washing.
